Physical Interventions

Delivering Physical Skills Training (ICML323) - Level 3

Who's it for?

From June 2010, physical intervention skills will be part of the door supervisor licence-linked qualifications. Trainers offering the new qualification must have a qualification in the Delivery of Physical Interventions. This programme is intended for trainers who wish to offer physical intervention skills training.

How long?

35 guided learning hours, divided into 5 Units:

  1. Physical Intervention for the Private Security Industry

Physical Intervention Training for the Private Security Industry (ICM L225) - Level 2

Who's it for?

This unit provides an introduction to non-pain related physical intervention for door supervisors and the legal and professional implications of its use. It emphasises the importance of only using physical intervention as a last resort and reducing risk of harm when it is used. (Other sector users of Physical Interventions can also attend this programme).

How long?

8 hours, divided into 5 Units:

  1. Understand physical interventions and the legal and professional implications of their use
  2. Understand how to reduce the risk of harm when physical intervention skills are used
  3. Be able to use non-pain related physical skills to protect yourself and others from assault
  4. Be able to use non-pain related standing holding and escorting techniques, including non-restrictive and restrictive skills
  5. Understand good practice to follow after physical interventions

BTEC Award in Disengagement and Non-restrictive Physical Intervention Skills - Level 2

BTEC Award in Disengagement and Physical Intervention Skills - Level 2

Who's it for?

The Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Award in Disengagement and Non-restrictive Physical Intervention Skills and the Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Award in Disengagement and Physical Intervention Skills are available. The qualifications are endorsed by the Employment National Training Organisation (ENTO), Skills for Health and Skills for Security and were accredited onto the National Qualifications Framework in July 2008 in the protective and security industries, (door supervisors, static and patrolling security guards, court security officers, close protection officers).

The BTEC Award is intended for anyone who may need to use physical intervention skills and will be particularly suitable for those people working:

  • in the NHS, (Ambulance Service staff, A&E staff, security staff, nurses working with disturbed patients)
  • with children in residential settings
  • with adults who have 'challenging behavior'
  • in schools, including special needs schools, teachers and nominated teaching assistants

How long?

The course comprises four units, with learners selecting unit 1 or unit 2, plus units 3 and 4 to provide a total of three units to achieve the qualification. Here at CRS|inc we run the 30 hour course over a week or deliver it in one or two day blocks.

  1. Law and risks of physical intervention when working with children and vulnerable adults (10 hours)
  2. Law and risks of physical intervention for people performing security functions (10 hours)
  3. Non-restrictive Methods of Disengagement and Physical Intervention (10hours)
  4. Restrictive Methods of Physical Intervention (10 hours)

Important Stuff!

The overall grading of the Level 2 BTEC Award in Physical Intervention Skills is a pass, based upon successful completion of 3 units. It is internally assessed and externally verified by subject-specialist external verifiers.



Mechanical Restraint (fast wrap/soft cuff/handcuff)

Who's it for?

The decision to handcuff a subject still remains to some a controversial area. The application of handcuffs is clearly based on the individual's perception of the subject at the time, in the circumstances, while taking into account all the facts, which must be accountable both in law and procedure.

From a potential complaint point of view, subjects who are allegedly unnecessarily handcuffed those who allege that excessive force was used while handcuffs were applied and handcuffs allegedly being applied too tightly are all important factors to consider.

These elements, together with the common offences relating to the application of handcuffs, assist in the creation CRS|inc simple training module to deal with most circumstances.

How long?

This course is designed for persons who, as part of their job may have to extract or detain people. This may include Civilian Enforcement Officers, Bailiffs and certain aspects of Nursing, Hospital Porters, Security Organizations, Private Prison Officers, and Civilian Detention Officers.

Certificate for the Deliverers of Conflict Management - Level 3

Who's it for?

This trainer programme comprises of assessed distance learning and assignments followed by a three-day practical workshop in the delivery of conflict management scenarios. This is a course for those with a 7303, or equivalent, wishing to deliver in house conflict management, 1884 Level 2 Certificate in Conflict Management or SIA 'Licence to Practice' Qualifications and training.

How long?

2 - 6 weeks plus 3 day workshop

Armed Hold Up

Who's it for?

All licensed premises, along with other retailers (i.e. Counter staff in banks; building societies; jewellers; bookmakers; local authority revenue collection; off-licenses; Post Offices; cash in transit teams) should be aware of the impact that an armed robbery/hold-up can have on their business and on the health, safety and welfare of staff, customers and themselves. The aim of this tailored training program is to reduce the risk, or at least minimise the impact, both human and financial, of armed robbery on a premises, and to maximise the chances of prosecution of armed robbery offenders.

By increasing the risk of apprehension, increasing the effort required to commit the offence and reducing the rewards available to the offender, it is possible to reduce the risk of victimisation.

As innovators of the extremely successful, simulation-led approach to personnel safety training, we have developed our dynamic Armed Hold-up/robbery awareness programme, specifically for staff who handle cash or other valuables, to minimise the risk of injury and trauma as a result of robbery.

Are you aware of “tiger kidnap”? This is one of the most frightening of crimes, but it is an unusual threat and training to deal with it is not always considered. Our programme will enhance personal safety skills, that will enhance the candidates safety, and through dissemination, that of their families and colleagues.

How long?

All events are one day in duration and include role-plays based around simulated incidents.

Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) - Level 2/3

Who's it for?

This introductory award provides a ‘stepping stone’ to teaching in the lifelong learning sector, and the qualifications required of the associate and full teaching roles. Candidates will come from a variety of vocational backgrounds and will seek an introduction to teaching; they may already be in role or have no prior experience.

How long?

4 – 8 weeks plus 5 day workshop

Candidates are required to complete two assignments, one theory and one practical, to be achieved at level 3. The assignments are broken down into smaller assessment tasks, which have an emphasis on creative and 'hands-on' learning.

Who's it for?

The Level 1 Award in Preparation for Event Volunteering (Personal Best) (QCF) is a programme for those who are economically inactive and is designed to enable them to gain knowledge, experience and confidence to progress into employment. It is designed to harness the enthusiasm of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games and all candidates who complete successfully are guaranteed (upon application) an interview to become a 'Games time volunteer'. This programme can also be used as a stepping stone to many career paths and the volunteering experience will give the candidate the opportunity to select the one that is best suited to them.

Who's it for?

The Level 2 Award in Understanding Stewarding at Spectator Events (QCF) is a qualification for individuals who are currently working or are seeking employment in Event Stewarding / Spectator Safety industry. This qualification provides candidates with the underpinning knowledge, based on the NOS for Spectator Safety, required by the Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds, (Green Guide), it may be used to enable the steward to work alone as a steward, however this must be followed by further training and assessment within 12 months.

Who's it for?

This Level 2 NVQ in Customer Service is suitable for anyone working or hoping to work within a customer service role.

The aim of this qualification is to contribute to the skills, knowledge and overall performance of the industry's workforce. It provides a first insight into the principles and processes of the delivery of customer service and will aid career progression.

Within your job role you need to be able to show that you can carry out a range of work activities in a variety of contexts. Some of these activities will need to be complex or non-routine tasks that may be carried out when you work as part of a team. Health & Safety/First Aid

Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (QCF) - Level 2

Who's it for?

From 1 October 2009, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have introducing changes to first aid training arrangements; employer duty holders will be expected to implement the changes from this date. This qualification has been designed to meet the new standards for Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) training.

Before taking up first aid duties, a first aider should have undertaken training and have a qualification that is HSE approved. In practice, they should hold a valid certificate of competence in either:

  • First Aid at Work (FAW), issued by a training organisation approved by HSE
  • Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW), issued by a training organisation approved by HSE or a recognised Awarding Body of the QCA/SQA.

Edge Weapon Awareness

Who's it for?

This programme is designed for management or staff working working in areas that are either likely to encounter individuals armed with knives / edged weapons or who have responsibility and accountability for providing safe systems of work and safe working practices for staff who are likely to be exposed to the risk of a knife / edged weapon encounter. It is aimed at raising awareness of the implications of knives and edged weapons and highlighting the legal and social consequences faced by those who may consider or currently are carrying such weapons. To provide learners with an enhanced awareness of the risk posed by knives and edged weapons in the UK today, as well as what would constitute competent safe working practices when managing situations where knives and edged weapons may be present.

Objectives & Course Content:

  1. The current risk posed by knives and edged weapons in the UK drawing reference from various Government, Home Office and Independent survey findings.
  2. The implications of the Human Rights Act 1998 with regard to the positive obligation imposed by Article 2 on all public authorities (direct or quasi) to preserve and protect life.
  3. The basic rights contained in English statute and common law in relation to an individual's right in defending themselves from an assailant armed with a knife or edged weapon.

Who's it for?

What type of job might an apprentice be doing?

Security guard (static and/or patrol), community warden, uniformed security guards in retail environments e.g. shopping malls, department stores.

Aspects of the Private Security Industry are regulated by the SIA and its authority is derived from the Private Security Industry Act 2001. The regulation requires that any individual carrying out activity that is covered by the Private Security Industry Act 2001 must be licensed to do so by the SIA. In order to get this licence there are certain criteria that must be met, amongst them are the applicant; must be over 18, undergo a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check, be legally allowed to live and work in the country and meet the minimum training standards for their chosen sector. Additionally, employers may also require that they meet the industry vetting standards based on BS7858

There are no required academic pre-entry requirements.

How long?

It is expected that apprentices/foundation modern apprentices will complete all elements of their programme in 6-9 months
